Puppy Class Schedule

Our Puppy classes are based on Dr. Jennifer Messer’s, DVM, “The Kinderpuppy Course”. We have also included AKC’s S.T.A.R. Puppy program. Evaluations will be given during the last class of Kinderpuppy II. All breeds of dogs, including mixed breeds, are welcome to participate in all of our classes.

Kinderpuppy I

This six-week class is for puppies between 8 and 18 weeks old (12 weeks old or younger on the first day of class). Consider purchasing a punch card for the continuation of this class in Kinderpuppy II.

In this class your puppy has the opportunity to socialize with other puppies and people. You will learn how to handle typical puppy training issues including:

  • Socialization with other pups and people

  • Puppy developmental stages

  • Canine body language

  • Sound desensitization/Spook proofing

  • Chewing/Appropriate toys

  • Preventing resource guarding

  • Bite inhibition

  • Housebreaking/Crate training

  • Settle/Calming techniques

  • Walking nice on a leash

  • Attention work

  • Sit, Down, Stand, Stay, and Come

  • Off/Eliminating jumping up on people

  • Give/Take it

Fee: $80 for 6-week classes or $130 for a punch card (two consecutive classes)    Fee includes handouts and homework sheets

Kinderpuppy II/ AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy

This six-week class is for puppies who have completed Kinderpuppy I and are between 18 and 24 weeks old (18 weeks old or younger on the first day of class).

In this class your puppy will continue to have the opportunity to socialize with other puppies and people. You will learn how to put your dog training skills from Kinderpuppy I to practical use. This class includes:

  • Socialization with other pups and people

  • Controlling jumping and play biting

  • Sit, Down, Stand, Stay, and Come without luring

  • Give/Take it

  • Distraction and proofing exercises

  • Integrating obedience with life rewards

  • Simple rules for the fun game of tug

  • Teaching tricks

  • Walking politely on a leash

  • Sending to a ‘place’ (matt, bed, etc.) to settle

  • Grooming (nail trimming, ear cleaning, brushing coat and teeth)

  • Obedience games  

  • AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy evaluations

Beginning Manners

This six-week class is for dogs five months and older with minimal or no prior training experience.  This class will include:

  • Walking politely on a leash

  • Sit, down, stand, come, stay

  • Give/Take it/Leave it

  • Attention work

  • Eliminating jumping on people

  • Self-control

  • Calming techniques

  • Targeting

  • Teaching tricks

  • Obedience games

Fee: $80 for 6-week classes or $130 for a punch card (two consecutive classes) - Fee includes booklet and handouts

Junior Manners

This six-week class is for dogs who have completed a Puppy or Beginning Manners Class and is based on building a better relationship with your dog.  This class will include:

  • Walking politely on a leash

  • Sit, down, stand, come and stay without luring

  • Distraction and proofing exercises

  • Self-control

  • Calming techniques

  • Targeting

  • Attention work with distractions

  • Obedience games

Fee: $80 for 6-week classes or $130 for a punch card (two consecutive classes) - Fee includes handouts

Intermediate Manners

This six-week class is for graduates of the Junior Manners class. In this class you and your dog will use what you have learned in previous classes to achieve a higher level of precision. This class will include:

  • Advanced attention work with distractions

  • Sit, down, stand, stay and come with distractions

  • Proofing exercises

  • Targeting

  • Introduction to heeling basics

  • Introduction to Rally obedience

Fee: $80 for 6-week classes / $130 for a punch card (two consecutive classes) - Fee includes handouts

Advanced Manners/ AKC CGC

This six-week class is for graduates of the Intermediate Manners class. Generally dogs are one year of age and older.  This class will include:

  • Heeling basics

  • Sit, down, stand, come and stay with distractions

  • Advanced attention work with distractions

  • Proofing exercises

  • Canine Good Citizen exercises

  • AKC CGC Testing

You and your dog will be put in situations to teach you to work with a higher level of attention and precision. This class will help you and your dog prepare to take the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test and earn a CGC certificate.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) started the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program in 1989 to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. Any dog, purebred or mixed breed, can participate. Showing confidence and control, the dog must complete the following ten steps:
1. Accept a friendly stranger
2. Sit politely for petting
3. Appearance and grooming
4. Out for a walk on a loose lead
5. Walk through a crowd
6. Sit and down on command/stay in place
7. Come when called
8. Reaction to another dog
9. Reactions to distractions
10. Supervised separation
